A group of prisoners often attack him but Andy keeps his calm. Red is the man to go to for smuggling things into prison. Andy and Red slowly become friends and Andy finds his place in prison. Andy asks Red for a small hammer because he says he's interested in carving rocks. Eventually Andy gets so much respect from the guards and the prisoners that he manages to arrange a library for the prisoners. When a new man named Tony enters prison, for murder, it becomes clear that Tony was also the one who had committed the murder Andy is accused of. The owners of the prison realize that it would be very bad for their name if it came out that they had falsely accused Andy of murder, as he had already been in this prison for many years. So because of this everything is being done for this piece of information to stay inside the prison. In the end, Andy is nowhere to be found in his cell and everything falls into place. It's found out that Andy used his hammer to dig a hole in the wall of his cell and after years and years of digging, he finally succesfully escapes from the prison.
